Plantation Life
Slaves had a very rough life. Many slaves had to listen to every word that the owner would tell them to. Many slaves would be beaten if they did not listen to their owners. Slaves also could not understand their owners very well because of the language that they spoke. Slaves were forced to work on the plantation working on things like, cropping corn, picking cotton, and things like that.
Fort Mose
- Fort Mose was a real destination for slaves believe it or not. Fort Mose was the first destination for slaves to go to. Fort Mose is located a couple miles just to the north of St. Augustine, FL. The conditions for the slaves at Fort Mose was not very good for them. There were many swamps and rough areas that the slaves were working in. The spanish did not keep their promises. Fort Mose back then was really the only place that a slave could go for protection. Fort Mose was a savior for the slaves.
AMARI VS. POLLY Compare and Contrast
Amari and Polly are very similar in some ways. In other ways the two characters are very different. Polly dislikes Amari because of her skin color which is african-american. When Polly was younger she was taught by her dad to not like african-americans. Polly also does not like the way that Amari smells. Polly thinks that she smells very badly. On the other side, Amari thinks that she needs Polly. Amari is saying that they need each other to survive. Amari and Polly are also very much alike. Amari and Polly are both 15 years old and they are both slaves.
Many slaves were taken underground the ship that they were on. The slaves would sleep on wood shelves that had vomit and feces on them from other slaves. Other slaves that were not taken under the boat or ship were thrown off the ship and then they eventually drowned. In Amari's case she was not thrown off of the ship. Instead she was taken under the ship by a man named Bill. The man did not rape her or whip her or anything like that. But what Bill did do is, he taught Amari how to speak English.
Historical Fiction Paragraph
Copper Sun is a fiction book. I think that Copper Sun is a lot better of a book then if it was a true story. The reason why I think that Copper Sun would be a lot better then if it was a true story is because, if Copper Sun was a true story it would not be as fun to read. When a book is fiction you have more of a visual image of what actually was happening in the book because the author, Sharon Draper, uses many details to describe what is happening in the book. If Copper Sun was a non-fiction book, it would be a lot harder to understand and you wouldn't have the visual image that you have as you do when you have a fiction book that describes it better.
Themes Paragraph
Many white slaves disliked the black slaves and did not want to be around them. This was going around the early time in history. The slaves did not like how they were being treated. Mainly the african-americans were treated worse than the white slaves were because of their skin color. The african-americans had a lot more work to do than the whites had to do. Some of the white slaves got benefits like being taught english and not being told what to do as much as the african-americans.
Slaves on the Middle Passage
Middle Passage
The Middle Passage carried many slaves one by one. The male slaves that were on the ship got treated differently. The warriors on the ship would acuse the male slaves of doing something bad instead of accusing the female slaves. All of the slaves were being transported to and from Europe and Africa. Many of slaves were being going to be traded and put in place of food or other goods. At night many slaves were taken underground and then they would be raped.
Sharon Draper Biography Sharon Draper was born on August 21, 1952. Sharon was an English teacher for thirty-years. She was a teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sharon was a straight A student in high-school. She loved to read books as a hobby. She went through almost every single book in the library. Sharon Draper's main goal was to become a teacher. Draper wanted to retire soon so that she could pursue writing all the time. She retired in 2005.
My reaction to the book. (Resolution)
My point of view of this book Copper Sun is, the book was very interesting and very real life because it was not a true story but it was based on a true story. I like how Amari and Polly are the same in the beginning. When the book gets going it talks about how Amari and Polly are starting to act differently. The author of Copper Sun, Sharon Draper is not afraid to tell what actually happened during slave trade and what actually happened to them while they were on their journey. Overall I thought Copper Sun was a very good book.
